Dr. Andrew M. Smith
Andrew is the primary contributor to Heart Aflame articles and also serves as the writer and host of Today in Church His-Story Podcast. Born and raised in West Virginia, Andrew enjoys all sports, especially watching West Virginia football and basketball. He could see the WVU Coliseum from his bedroom window as a kid and also sold programs at WVU football games. His hobbies include running and reading. He also enjoys coaching Middle School soccer, as well as his sons teams at Florida Elite Soccer Academy where he also serves on the part-time staff working in the Future Stars Program. In his spare time he also conducts One on One Soccer Training. Andrew is married to Corie Lynne and together they have five children: Gracie, Jackson, Preston, Coplen, and Calvin.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in Bible from Clearwater Christian College (Clearwater, FL) in 2003 where he also lettered in soccer and minored in coaching. Immediately following college, Andrew attended Southern Seminary (Louisville, KY) where he received a Master of Divinity in The Theology School in 2009. Then in 2018, Andrew received his Doctorate in Expository Preaching from the Master’s Seminary (Los Angeles, CA) where he trained under Dr. John MacArthur and Dr. Steve Lawson.
Andrew providentially met his wife Corie while reluctantly agreeing to be part of a youth retreat for junior high and high school students two months before his graduation from college in FL. After backing out at the last second and hiding in the dorms on campus (true story), he was found by friends and dragged one hour down the road to a large Baptist church where the retreat was being held. He thought he had met all the youth counselors participating that weekend in the church fellowship hall, and then Corie Lynne walked in. He immediately introduced himself to her. She was a third generation member of the church hosting the retreat. Shortly after graduation, he was hired as the Youth Intern at the church before heading off to his first semester of Seminary in Louisville, KY. Meanwhile, Corie continued her college education at The Baptist College of Florida (Graceville, FL). The next Christmas he and Corie were engaged, and then married that Summer. Corie is the former Queen of De Soto Historical Society (2002).
Andrew grew up in the church, descending from a long line of preachers. Saved at an early age, he preached his first sermon as a teenager and shortly thereafter began regular pulpit supply in various churches. At 24, while still in seminary, he became a candidate to pastor a church in West Virginia. After receiving this church’s call to be their pastor, he was ordained. Since then has has pastored 5 different congregations in WV, KY, and FL.
He currently pastors Christ Reformed, a church in St. Augustine, FL that he jointly planted in 2015. He also helped establish The Society for Expository Preaching where he serves as one of three preaching fellows.
